Know your New Community

Before you actually make your move, you may want to explore your new community.

If possible, drive around the area and find the best route to work or to your children’s schools. If you’re a moving to a new town, you can request an information packet for your new community from the Chamber of Commerce in that town. Knowing ahead of time where your shopping, dining and other services are located will make for a smoother transition.

These are just a few places whose location you may want to know before your move:

• Work
   How close to home is it? What is the best way to get there?
• Schools
  Where are the nearest schools and transportation routes located? If your children are transferring schools, be sure to allow plenty of time to make the necessary arrangements, so they won’t have to make up for missed time.
• Health and Dental Facilities
  If you will be transferring from your current physician or dentist, start looking for a new one. Ask your current medical providers for referrals and visit several places before making your decision.
• Emergency Services and Contact Information
  Locate the nearest hospitals, emergency rooms and the local police and fire departments. Be sure to keep their contact information in a safe place and take it with you when you move.
• Shopping, Dining and Entertainment
  Become familiar with where you will go for groceries, pharmaceuticals, dry cleaners, dining and entertainment in your area.
