Important Information to know about your home
In case of an emergency, homeowners should know the location of:
- The main water shut-off valve
- The gas shut off valve
- The shut-off switches for the heating and air conditioning systems
- The electrical shut-off switches.
Also, make sure extra house keys are available in case of an emergency. It is also advised to have on hand a list of emergency facilities and phone numbers. You can never be too careful.

Newer homes may not require as much attention as older homes, however regular care can help minimize unexpected repair and expense.
Here are some common seasonal maintenance tips that can help keep your home in good condition.
Spring
- Close fireplace damper when not in use.
- Replace smoke and fire alarm batteries.
- Cut back any trees or shrubs touching the exterior.
- Inspect and touch up exterior paint.
- Inspect foundation for water penetration.
- Inspect or treat exterior wood for splintering, decay and insect damage.
- Inspect window insulation and remove storm windows.
- Clean exterior of upper-story windows.
- Check window screens, repairing as needed.
- Clean gutters and inspect downspouts.
- Inspect roof for warping and cracking.
- Perform seasonal pest control.
- Inspect and replace filters as necessary (air conditioner, furnace, pool, etc.).
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms; replace batteries if necessary.
Summer
- Clean and vacuum grill and compressor unit of central air conditioner.
- Inspect exposed plumbing areas for dampness and mold.
- Fix leaky faucets (inside and outside).
- Fix loose or cracked caulking around tiles, sinks, tubs, showers, toilets and counters.
- Inspect appliance hoses and ventilation according to owner's manual.
- Power wash, repair, refinish and seal decks; reset any protruding nails.
- Clean and lubricate sliding-glass-door tracks and window tracks.
- Lubricate door hinges and locks.
- Oil garage doors.
- Patch driveway and other concrete, or treat asphalt.
- Check propane hose on grill for cracks or leaks.
- Make sure that all of the circuit breakers clearly identify the circuits they control.
- Perform seasonal pest control.
Fall
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms; replace batteries if necessary.
- Inspect and clean fireplace and chimney.
- Clean and adjust humidifier on furnace.
- Clean or vacuum heating grills and registers.
- Wax and buff wood floors.
- Inspect windows screens and insulation, and install storm windows.
- Inspect weather-stripping around doors and replace as needed.
- Cut back any trees or shrubs touching the roof or exterior.
- Clean gutters and inspect downspouts.
- Trim, cover or bring in outdoor plants as needed.
- Perform seasonal pest control.
Winter
- Clean or replace dryer vent hose.
- Check and refill fire extinguishers.
- Service furnace or other heating system (change filter).
- Professionally clean curtains and carpet.
- Inspect and touch up interior paint.
- Inspect exposed plumbing areas for dampness and mold (twice per year).
- Test for carbon monoxide.
- Make sure stairways are well lit.
